Newly appointed US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales hailed the Feb. 10 conviction of activist attorney Lynne Stewart and her co-defendants, saying the verdicts send a clear, unmistakable message that this department will pursue both those who carry out acts of terrorism and those who assist them with their murderous goals. The New York Times coverage of the Justice Department victory called it one of the countrys most important terror cases since the Sept.
11 attacks. But supporters of Lynne Stewart say the case had more to do with a dangerous erosion of attorney-client privilege than with terrorism.
After 12 days of deliberations, Stewart was convicted on all five charges she facedincluding providing material support to terrorism, conspiracy to abet terrorism, and lying to the government about her actions.
