On March 1, The New York Times reported that El Museo del Barrio, a bastion of Puerto Rican art and culture in New York City since 1969, may soon join the ranks of the city’s largest and most prominent cultural institutions.
El Museo has occupied part of a building on Fifth Avenue, near the northeast corner of Central Park, for close to 25 years. In the near future, however, the museum may have the chance to take over the building next door, where the Museum of the City of New York now resides and which offers almost ten times the exhibit space of El Museo’s current location.
Such a move would be a tremendous step forward for a museum that originated in a single public school classroom in East Harlem.
