After a nearly three-week search, Lakewood has selected Mario Morales as its new football head coach, the school’s athletic director Mike Wadley confirmed Wednesday.

Morales, 59, is a former head coach at St.

Anthony and Wilson. He replaces Justin Utupo, who accepted the head coach position at Long Beach Poly earlier this month.

Morales was an assistant coach on Utupo’s staff last season and has been the dean of students at Lakewood for 14 years.

He will remain in that role at the school.

“I’ve always felt it’s important have the head coach on-campus,” Morales said.

“It’s not only an asset to me but an asset to the administration, players and the coaches. There’s a lot of things that happen on campus throughout the day and it’s always good to have a coach on campus be accessible, not only to them but even to recruiters as an example.
